"Fish On" Fretless Bass Project

so... probably fairly reckless and certainly experimental... now that I have my purple body finish sanded... I wanted to take a heat gun to it to try to enhance the purple....

purpleheart starts to "sweat" if you get it hot enough... and I imagine that is getting to the danger zone because heating up titebond is a dangerous proposition.  If you watch enough pen blank videos you'll see them really heat the piss out of the blank and before your eyes the purple will darken... def not going that far here.  Can't heat it up before you work it because sanding turns it back to dull/brown/red.  it def looks a hair more purple to me.

You have gotten good enough that you don't need my encouragement....but you certainly deserve my appreciation!

SR

Not true... it is the encouragement of you and others on this forum that makes it all worthwhile.  I also very much appreciate your appreciation!!

Well done, Mike. No use name dropping us in your entry - flattery will get you nowhere.

Now start sucking more to give others a chance 😉😉😉

Just my way of acknowledging that I haven't done any of my builds alone.  You hung in there with me on that bad driver board issue way longer than I could ever have asked and I deeply appreciate it.  Plus you learned me something, and all my high school teachers collectively gasped at how you/Mikro succeeded where they failed lol!

Grats on GOTM 🙂

Also that purple heart version is looking delectable! Does the heat treatment help the colour stay rich longer / age slower?

thank you!  well... there is a lot of conflicting info in the world in regards to purpleheart.  I've read that the sun turns it purple, and that the sun turns it brown.  I've read that the only way to keep it purple is to use uv protection.  I've also read that if you seal it well it will prevent browning.  Then there is my intuition... I've seen at least a few old alembic guitars that are purpleheart and maple... and they most def did not have uv protectant on them... and yet they are still purple.  I've seen lots more that have browned.

Having seen the "pen blank guys" take a torch to purpleheart and make it vivid purple, my thoughts were: #1 get it as purple as possible to start with and #2 use osmo polyx which is opaque white when you see it at the right angle... figured this would help keep the sun off a little since I'm not interested in doing a gloss..

I guess time will tell... but for now... I put some tru oil on first and it made it a hair 'magenta'... then the osmo.  it is looking pretty good and I'm working out the electronics as well as a few issues with finish and setup.  I hope to get to a video of that one in the next week or so.  You'll have to check back a decade from now to know for sure if it's still vivid!!  hehe.

so about a week ago I finally found a place to buy a replacement piezo for the purpleheart version of this bass... think I can call it done now so I set about taking some photos.

Have been working on a demo vid of it... but I guess I don't know how to play fretless anymore lol.

That’s a beauty! In my opinion purpleheart has a color that is very difficult to mix with other colors. The way you have done it here works really nice.

thank you @henrim, that's very kind of you to say.  Truth be told... I'm just picking up what alembic put down back in the 70's!  you just can't go wrong with maple and purpleheart!  I wish I had maintained a bit more of the purple... and I honestly thought the finish I chose would do that... but she turned a rich purple/red instead... and I'm pretty pleased with the accident.

thank you again for the reply!

Can't argue against that, the maple and purpleheart mix is delicious!

And your camera work has improved exponentially! Some of the pictures made me drool...

hehe, thank you biz.  I actually tried an experiment w camera based on some vids I saw where the guy overexposes the pics.  so I went to aperture mode on my camera... and monkied around with that... but it was a pretty bad failure afa results.  then I switched to manual mode... set iso and played with aperture... that resulted in pics 1-7 i think... much darker background.  then my cat puked all over the backdrop so...she must have been satisfied with the pics!

Yepp, they almost look like the guitar is floating in darkness. The three last ones also hide the backdrop pretty well. Almost like renderings!

Just to add to your toolbox, here's what I did with one of the others. Using Paint.Net/Brightness and Contrast I decreased the brightness by 10 and increased contrast by 10:

right on.  floating: well I did have it floating a bit... I bought some rockler shop biscuits and used them to prop up the guitar... just about 1" above the backdrop but it is a nice effect.  I did also monkey a bit with brightness/contrast in photoshop but Idunno.... I guess I feel that stuff is a bit like eq... should be a last resort.  I hope that as I get more experience monkeying with the iso and aperture I'll arrive at brighter looking photos at the start... but it is always a good thing to know.  thanks again for the reply.
