  1. thanks for the replys. thats the general concensus i've found. im the type of person that will buy any tool that will make my job easier but when i carved the contour in the back of the guitar i just finished it was extremely satisfying.
  2. been there and done that. just looking for as much info as i can possibly get till everything is ready for me to take the plunge.
  3. hello there. i've just completed my first completed guitar and am on to my next (building these darn things is about as addictive as gettin inked) with the build i just finished the only thing i dont like about it is the neck (fender). so, im gonna build a neck through 25"scale with multiple laminations. 3 maple 2 bloodwood stringers and ebony FB (stewmac/lmii). im working out the measurements of each peice full scale on paper first. i picked up the last of the wood today(bloodwood). i have enough maple for 3-4 necks and enough bloodwood for the 2 stringers (.25") and possibly a fretboard (if its possible to use as such). body will be alder. anyway, i was just looking for a few tips as this is my first attempt at carving a neck. thanks for any advice.
  4. your might need more than a 6 gallon tank. with a syphon feed gun like that you will likely need to spray at around 35-40psi at the gun. i had (recently stolen) a 3cfm @ 90psi compressor with a 13 gallon tank that was barely able to hold enough air in the tank so that the compressor wasnt running constant while spraying at 15psi at the gun (automotive gravity feed HVLP), compressor kicked in every min or 2 just a thought
  5. i live about 4 hrs away, dont know if ya know chatham or not ( i live 20 min out of chatham) my brother's in T.O though, next time im up there i might look ya up. thanks for offering though do you buy wood localy????
  6. thanks, i dont think the headstock fits either, but im just waiting for my brother to order the neck he wants, then ill cut a headstock that fits and have the same guy finish it. the controls are a little close, im waiting for the right knobs to come in, they'll give a little more room between them than these do.
  7. i built this guitar for my brother as a christmas gift. as of right now it just needs a few tweeks here and there. (yes it still needs to be sanded and buffed, gonna give that micromesh a try in a couple months) body is 2 peice sapele almost 2"thick.(after sanding) dimarzio tonezone in bridge and duncan hotrails in neck. it has a 5 position rotary switch, 1 volume per pickup, master tone, and a mini toggle for phase reverse on the duncan. neck is a squire POS untill he buys the neck he wants for it. (i chose a fender neck because it the scale and heel mach the one he is gonna order for it) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...io/IMG_4943.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...io/IMG_4947.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...io/IMG_4944.jpg the guitar was painted by a very good friend with a custom red pearl that flips to a copper colour under different lighting. this pic shows the shift quite well http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Sui...io/IMG_4809.jpg overall i think it turned out alright for my first finished guitar, (last one hit the WOD before it could be finished). next one will have the bridge pickup closer to the bridge. opinions welcome
  8. now, what is the distance from the fret side of the nut to the center of the 12th fret. if its 12.5" it is the right scale, if its 12.75" you have the wrong scale neck, the one you have is 25.5" and you need a 25"scale neck. or the kahler was installed wrong.
  9. man, i just realized i live less than an hour from this goof. i should pay a visit next time im in windsor and see what his work is like.
  10. " build a lofo-mofo http://aronnelson.com/gallery/albums/album...foMofo_Vero.jpg -------------------- §" what does it do exactly????
  11. "i think it will take more than diodes to be able to measure AC at such low voltages. " a couple of diodes and measure the voltage as DC. use the peak/hold function on the meter, might be able to help to determine the peak voltage of the AC signal.
  12. sorry, had some problems posting this the first time. my brother is looking for a tone circut that rather than rolling off the low end will roll off both low and high freq's. when fully engaged he would like it to have a midrange "lofi" sound. just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible, thanks
  13. oh cool, i thought you were doin a bolt on. should be good then
  14. "One question though, if you are sticking with the strat shape, it looks like you cut off a bit of where the neck fits in on the body. I'm not sure if that's enough room to fit the neck in. " i was just going to say the same thing, a strat neck sits 3" in. looks good otherwise
  15. you can but it takes some careful mixing, acording to my painter. there are no real off the shelf colours, it will have to be custom mixed
  16. should be made out of alder, from the info ive come accross. iv got a squire body in the garage at the moment, if it wasnt so darn cold right now id find out fer sure what it is
  17. absolutly stunning. if you dont mind, whats the approx cost for one of those(if you do mind thats fine). im not too fond of the body shape but your build quality speaks for itself and if i had the cash id have one already.
  18. if everything goes well this one will be sick. love the woods too.
  19. according to a very good friend who happens to be the head body man at the local GM dealership you cannot clear a rattlecan enamel with the type of clear coat a body shop would use, the solvents will eat through your color coat
  20. hok candys need to be cleared right away because they remain gooey and doesnt harden (thats how they maintain their bright colors), any urethane automotive base coat does not have a catalyst thus needs to be cleared
  21. thanks alot, it helps tons. "when you eventually get your switch in late january after its got caught up in the christmas post!" hahaha, i hope not, i need this guitar built for christmas for my brother
  22. thanks alot, this is the layout of the stew mac switch (actually their diagram for dual buckers.) which i find out today are backordered till dec 4th. clicky
  23. i have a prs style 5way 4pole rotory switch coming from stewmac. the guitar its going is has a dimarzzio hb in bridge (4conductor) and single coil in neck. im looking for this: 1-hb 2-outer coil 3-outer coil/sc 4-inner coil/sc 5-sc is this even an option????? if so could anyone come up with a wiring diagram (i also have an on/on mini toggle for phase reversal?) thanks for any help
  24. first, use 2 identicle speakers, second, that car speaker is a subwoofer, not designed to handle a fullrange signal, only sub freq.
  25. stewmac sells all the pickup templates. i bought the full set, the single coil one give you a nice snug fit, and they're only like 5 bucks
