johnsilver Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Hyunsu, for the guitars with the lignum vitae necks, how is the balance of the guitars? Lignum vitae is really dense and heavy wood. Does the neck overbalance the body? If not, isn't the guitar really heavy. I really like the strat you play. Very clean. By the way, I was in Ulsan and Busan two weeks ago on business. psw Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Merbau is a fairly common wood down here for decking and fence pickets...not quite thickenough for a whole neck but would be ideal for laminations...it's probably work as the fret board too but it does have an open grain and a bit oily so I'm not sure how it would take a finish... hyunsu Posted June 30, 2005 Author Report Share Posted June 30, 2005 melbau is from south asian, and it is dense.. and have oil.. my wood buy company cutting merlbau.. and it air day.. korea is 4 seasons.. -10 ~ 30, and i suprized.. merlbau's air dry is amazing.. it not cover for dry.. it rain.. or snow.. or sunshine.. you will find rain trace... and it's wood working is good.. i make neck with vera(lignum viete), all use hand tool.. knife, scrapper, sand paper.. vera is really extreamist dense wood.. janka hardness is 4,500 ( maple 1,450, mahogany 800, merlbau 1,900, bubingga 2,500) i like merlbau, if you meet my upload pic conditions wood. buy it.. remmber it .. merlbau is not good texture.. maple is more good texture and eazy to finish.. but merlbau is give you.. good sound.. vera neck is inconsistent wood.. very dense.. but wenmake guitar.. it's sound is not too hight tone.. very powerfull sound.. but i dont finish it.. not use oilfinish.. i make strat with vera.. & walnut body.. but i dont like this sound.. test with Duncan 59 Neck pickup + Duncan59 Brige pickup => Not bad. Duncan 59 Neck pickup + DuncanJB Brige pickup => bad.. i will make it another body.. i dont satisfy vera + walnut guitar... have nice day.. I had no idea what it was when I found some in the exotic woods store, but it gave such a beautiful, basey ring when I gave the board a knock, so I just had to use it in a neck. Have you ever heard of Jatoba, or African Jatoba wood. I just started a laminated neck with Jatoba in the middle and it looks similar to what you are using. I love how it looks in a neck and the jatoba looks great unfinished but I'm not sure if it will be a bad idea or not. Anyway keep up the great work, you are a big help for picking wood for projects because you have used so many and know the details of each! Good Luck! hyunsu Posted July 1, 2005 Author Report Share Posted July 1, 2005 i know.. jatoba is brazil wood.. i 'm first hear African jatoba.. and i dont knock jatova.. in my memory.. jatova is very dense wood.. my wood selection point is dense but have woods conduit.. many conduit wood is not good for finish.. and i have Jarrah wood.. but i dont use it.. too dance.. and difficult wood working.. and dont have good tone for neck.. too tight tone.. but enable slim neck.. dense and thick is very many relation.. dense wood is maked slim.. and soft wood is maked thick(neck case) neck wood material & Fingerboard's dense.. yesterday i played verawood neck & walnut body.. very good funching power guitar.. (Pickup is Dencan59 Neck, Brige) i use JCM2000 DSL100 amp.. very good at high gain play.. dont need ESP, Jackson guitar ^^ My JCM2000 DSL100 high gain setting is Guitar -> Only Amp.. Deep Switch on shift Switch on Presence is 7 High 7 mid 4 bass 5 gain is Lead2.. Gain 8 Voulum 4.. when Volumup.. too big sound.. T_T setting is different each guitar.. have nice day.. Often called brazillian cherry, common for flooring, and has a fairly good rep as a tonewood, although it's not always the easiest to work. Merbau I'm not wild on; it looks quite a bit like mahogany, the tap's quite decen, but it's denser, heavier, coarser than even the coarsest of African mahoganies, and can be a bit splitty when worked. It's also not a whole lot less expensive than Sapele or Khaya, both of which I'd choose over Merbau if given the option. I see quite a bit of outdoor work done in Merbau, as it seems to wear well, and some of the figure's quite striking, but it's just not my thing.. Nice guitars, though! Looking sweet! Sneft Posted July 17, 2005 Report Share Posted July 17, 2005 hmm. im currently working on a merbau guitar and yes it is very dense and heavy(but then again i havent started routing yet..) its grain is pretty course so it does have to be filled i think. S+S+S with humberker Toggle.. pickup is hand maded pickup... it need 2 hours for 1 set.. merlbau is really great tone wood.. this new guitar is very sweet.. when i setup pickup.. i will make sample sound... have nice weekend... Juniperus chinesus is a chinese juniper no? its wild. you see so many bonsai trees that are chinese juniper, is the wood a hardwood? i thought needle trees were softwood.
