carousel182
I'm thinking of using duplicolor, would you think that would be okay?
avengers63
Honestly, I have NO idea how automotive clear coat would react to wood. It might be great, it might be a pile of poo. All I can say is that it was intended to go over automotive paint, which was intended to go on metal, fiberglass, and body filler (Bondo). For my time & money, I'd rather use a finish that was meant to go on wood. FWIW: I use Meguairs swirl remover for the final polish. Meguairs is an automotive finish product which works beautifly on lacwuer, a wood finish. Maybe Dupli-Color clear coat would be fantastic. Maybe not. If you go this route, I'd use a sealer coat first. Basic sanding sealer would be fine. This would prevent the clear from soaking into the body. If it doesn't work out, you'd be able to get the clear off of the body. Without the sealer, it'd soak into the wood and might not EVER come off all the way. Better safe than sorry! carousel182
yea, i sealed the back and am priming it with duplicolor primer then am using duplicolor paint, then duplicolor clear. all of it is being sprayed out of my gun, not rattle cans. guitar2005
Maybe Dupli-Color clear coat would be fantastic. Maybe not. Dupli color clear is garbage. Stay away. 2 years later, my clear coat still hasn't hardened. If I put the guitar on my lap, my jeans leave an impression on the finish. I called Dupli Color and they just said that I should only have used 1-2 coats. Pffft@@#! Whatever. The product is crap.

The product is crap. i used a whole can on just a body one time, and it dried rock hard by the next morning. put it together, and never had a problem. for 2 years i strictly used that. worked fine for me all the time. i even dropped in on the corner of my friends metal bed post, and it just barley dinged it. carousel182
So with this duplicolor how long should I be waiting for cure? What kind of duplicolor paints were you guys using? Rattle cans or stuff you need to spray yourself.
avengers63
So, with the testimonies of guitar2005 & killemall8, we're no further along than we were a few days ago. That's pretty typical. So with this duplicolor how long should I be waiting for cure? A general rule of thumb (no pun intended) is the Thumbnail Test. Try to dent the finish with your thumbnail. If you can do it, it needs to cure longer. If not, you're probably good to go. A good place to try it is under where the neckplate will go. If you dent the finish there, it won't ever be seen. Ok, let me qualify my post a little more. I used Dupli-Color in a rattle can and its the Acrylic Lacquer variety that I used (not the enamel). Solid Colors were better than the clear. Like I said though.... Dupli-Color clear will NOT harden over time. Avoid it as it will NOT pass the famous thumbnail test. My preffered clear is Behlen's or McFaddens nitro lacquer. I f you don't like nitro lacquer, there's tons of other good options out there. Check out the finishing tuts. carousel182
what about what killemall said? he said his duplicolor clear dried good. Im just going to try to use the clear I have, I paid for it already, theirs no returning it now. Also. When i sprayed the color on today it went on kind of rough. it wasnt smooth at all. Is this a problem, or something that could easily be ssolved with a little bit of sanding.
avengers63
It's best to level it out before going to the next product. I'd use a sanding sponge at about 220-300 grit or so. A sponge will have more even pressure on the curves & edges than your hand, therefore less likely to sand through.
carousel182
Aye, thanks for the help. Thats what I'm gonna do. I got a pretty nice coat of black down. Theirs 3.5 coats of color, thats all I'm going to put on it. I'll post up some pics in a few minutes. You'd think this is this first guitar I've ever finished with some of my questions lol. The back the side (you can see the cans of paint I'm using.) http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0447.jpg shot of the neck. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0448.jpg Also, I don't even think I mentioned this, the back is going to be black and the front is going to be natural. Xanthus
Also, I don't even think I mentioned this, the back is going to be black and the front is going to be natural. Oh good, I was going to be sad otherwise
carousel182
I love natural tops, their are few times i would ever pass up the opportunity to add another to my collection . anyway, here it is with some clear. the instructions said to spray the clear 15 minutes after, i waited 2 hours and wet sanded the back with 400 grit to get rid of a few imperfections then i sprayed. carousel182
Finished. This duplicolor paint worked AMAZING. I'd highly recommend it to anyone that needs to find some paint locally. This guitar plays very good. the action is perfect, and it sounds great. Too bad i cant do any real playing . http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0461.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0462.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0464.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0465.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0466.jpg
anderekel
Looks awesome, any chance you could take a picture of the whole thing, front and back? Just curious to see how it all looks together.
carousel182
Here you go. I think it flows nicely. I think this may be a tiny bit larger than the average firebird.
anderekel
Yeah it does look a little bigger, and backwards looks great though, I really like the gold hardware on it.

carousel182
I'm thinking of adding a black pickguard somewhere in the future. Im not sure if itd look good though, any suggestions. Edited April 27, 2008 by carousel182
Geo
I'd have to vote no on the black pickguard, because your work looks so fabulous in natural colors! I'd hate to see some of that beautiful maple covered with black plastic.
carousel182
The top is actually curly cherry, Its great wood. I don't know why more people don't use cherry for guitars
