jessejames
I dont do laminations because I dont like the way they look, but also because I'm afraid this would happen. If it were me, I would do a burst on the back and heavily color the heel transition area for a few inches both ways to help hide the mismatched transition. killemall8
So, Onward to more finishing problems... Never had a a single problem with my usual open grained poly finishes. But of course... the one commission i take... Apparently the rosewood veneer doenst like poly. It stayed gooey and soft for over a week, and pretty much just rolls off the wood. Yet another refinish needed.
Prostheta
This is my shellac week so I can't help but say, "seal it up with a 1lb cut of shellac".
killemall8
I just might have to do that. I had yet to run into a wood that i couldnt use regular poly on. Even cocobolo seemed to handle it fine. I have been meaning to try shellac anyway. This might be a real reason to do so.
MiKro
Luis, Just remember to use a dewaxed shellac. Either get some shellac flakes and make your own or use Zinnsers Bullseye sealer shellac in the white can not the yellow can. YOU will need to thin the Zinnsers to a 1lb cut though. killemall8
I was going to ask if that bullseye stuff was dewaxed. How do you thin it? I think i found a way round it. I wet sanded the top part with mineral spirits, then worked in an oil finish with 2k grit sandpaper. It buffed it nicely and worked the oil in. It brough out the the color nicely and gave it a very nice satin sheen.
ScottR
How do you thin it? Denatured alcohol. SR

ScottR
What's that clear you've got the top flooded in? Some of that bar top two part stuff? SR
killemall8
It is just epoxy. Redwood is pretty much a sponge, and is very weak being burl.
killemall8
Finally got a business license. And nothing like messing up 5 guitars in a row to start that off, and to send me back to the hating making guitars feeling. What a waste of good wood. pan_kara
Wow. Nice job on that 2-part binding. With that padouk thats one good looking fretboard!
killemall8
Thank you sir. I am quite fond of it. I think i will be doing this kind of binding more often now. I just have to rout the control cavity, make the side dots (MOP) then glue the neck in.
Prostheta
That neck profile looks a bit chunky.
ScottR
That neck profile looks a bit chunky. What? It's just a really wide trapezoid. Looks great K. Are you really going to dye the top even more? And are you going to bind the end of the fretboard or leave it as is? SR
killemall8
Yes pros, I am experimenting with a new neck profile shape Scott, Yes, the top will be dyed black, like the one i made previously. I am actually going to leave the end of the fretboard unbound. I like the way it looks better without it.

guitar2005
Wow. Your builds have come a long way. I have to ask... why the scarf in the middle of the neck?
killemall8
Its not quite in the middle of the neck. Its only 4" below the nut. When you use thicker neck blanks, the lower down teh neck the scarf will be.
