Scott Rosenberger Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 YEs, Sugar Maple is the Same species as Hard Maple/ Rock Maple/ Birdseye Maple. It's the Neck wood most commonly used by Fender Quote
hyunsu Posted June 8, 2004 Author Report Posted June 8, 2004 today's my work.. i try.. no trusroad & no fingerboard. Only sugar maple neck.. i satisfy with maple neck sound.. so no want trusroard & fingerboard.. it is not easy for neck condition.. but when neck condition is not good.. i will repair ^^ and i make this neck 0 fret thick is 22mm ^^ my hand is big.. so no matter for me to play guitar.. have nice day.. MKGBass Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 Looks great! I love how your pics always go from using some stone age tool to having a perfect neck in one pic! Quote
frankie Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 what the heck is soft curly maple, and would it be suitable for a cap?? Quote
GuitarMaestro Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 what the heck is soft curly maple, and would it be suitable for a cap?? It is a softer less stable species of maple which should NOT be used for necks unless you laminate it with another stronger species of wood. For guitar tops it is fine and "curly" means that it has a nice tiger-like figure.... Quote
jammy Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 is that really an ibanez headstock lying about in one of your pics? Quote
dcamp67 Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 is that really an ibanez headstock lying about in one of your pics? Look at the top picture, see what he's using between the clamp and his neck to protect the wood? Quote

nsherman2006 Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 YOU CUT UP A JEM!?!?!?! YOU OUGHT TO BE HANGED FOR THIS ATROCITY you should have torn up a cheapie guitar, NOT A JEM!!!!! WHY!!!!! Quote
LGM Guitars Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 Based on what Scott said, Sugar maple is fine for a neck, maple sugar however won't work worth a damn Quote
weezerboy Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 i am constantly amazed by your work hyunsu, the fact that you show that beautiful instruments can be made without fancy tools i mean, come on- look at that knife! Quote
VanKirk Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 you should have torn up a cheapie guitar, NOT A JEM!!!!! WHY!!!!! Probably because the knowledge he gained disassembling it and the skills he already has he could build many of them with better quality than Ibanez and customized to his high standards. Very impressive again Hyunsu! Even more impressive because you truly build by hand. YOU OUGHT TO BE HANGED FOR THIS ATROCITY Not like it was your Jem. Chill out, damn. Quote
westhemann Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 YOU CUT UP A JEM!?!?!?! YOU OUGHT TO BE HANGED FOR THIS ATROCITY you should have torn up a cheapie guitar, NOT A JEM!!!!! WHY!!!!! it's just a guitar....get over it. i wouldn't have done it,but only because i would have sold it.but even a jem is only a mass produced cookie cutter guitar which can be improved upon in many ways. Quote
nsherman2006 Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 well i happen to like the jems a lot, and to see one cut up(i am tempted to say wasted, but you gained knowledge from it) is like a knife in the side, like watching those movies where they destroy things that cost enough money to feed hundreds of starving children. Whatever. Neal p.s.: hyunsu, have any more 'brand guitars' you want to get rid of? Quote
westhemann Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 well i happen to like the jems a lot, and to see one cut up(i am tempted to say wasted, but you gained knowledge from it) is like a knife in the side, like watching those movies where they destroy things that cost enough money to feed hundreds of starving children. Whatever. Neal p.s.: hyunsu, have any more 'brand guitars' you want to get rid of? oh i understand your viewpoint completely....i used to get so angry seeing kirk hammett destroy those esp guitars of his...i wanted one so bad i could taste it but i got over it too. he used to treasure his guitars, but i get the distinct impression that he does not really care for the esp guitars...but i think he still has all his old ones from the eightees...that jackson v of his was super nice Quote
hyunsu Posted June 9, 2004 Author Report Posted June 9, 2004 if i have many money.. i buy Brand Guitar and i will do cut.. and Saw.. Why? for my study.. and compare wood.. and sound.. but i'm not rich.. T_T my making is really stone age tool.. dont angry for my Ibanez cutting.. i want to feel ibanez neck wood's dense and body's masterial's status.. by my hands using cheasle.. and knife.. and what.. what Brand guitar expensive than none brand.. i dont need brand guitar for play.. but i need brand guitar for study.. i think my jem is death.. but my study is growing up.. sorry for my jem's Death... tsl602000 Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 YOU OUGHT TO BE HANGED FOR THIS ATROCITY you should have torn up a cheapie guitar, NOT A JEM!!!!! WHY!!!!! Hyunsu should be decorated for that! Quote
Hotrock Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Hyunsu, you really are da man. Is that a knife or a magic wand. It's good to know that if you get lost in the woods and you're with Hyunsu, you might get hungry but everyone would leave with a new freshly whittled guitar. I think that when you've got the skills of Hyunsu you're quite within your rights to chop up any guitar that you want. Chances are it'll be replaced with something much better. Quote
LGM Guitars Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I can see cutting up a Gibson, or Fender, or PRS, but Ibanez guitars are actually comfortable to play Ok, so see, it's all in what you prefer, I don't think Gibson or Fender have EVER made a comfortable guitar much less one that looks good, PRS has made some impressive looking guitars, but I don't like how they play. Nothing is more cookie cutter than a Strat or Les Paul. I like the Jem's, I think they feel like a players guitar, at any rate, invest in a contour gauge, they cost like $15 and you can get every contour you want off a neck WITHOUT having to destroy it. Other than that, the work is impressive, I sure wouldn't have the patience to do it with a knife like that Quote
GuitarMaestro Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Other than that, the work is impressive, I sure wouldn't have the patience to do it with a knife like that With one of these Japanese knives and the skill to handle it properly it might even be faster then spokeshave and drawknife I suspect....
