LGM Guitars
I chose custom color, but only because inlay wasn't up there hehehe. I like em alll!!!!!!! (although, I don't seem to have a love affair with the monkey grip LOL)
BeAR
hehe......gotta love cut and paste.
Metalgoth
I'm doing my first real custom job right now, and my favorite mod is one of the tougher ones, the Lion's Claw rout. I think it would look great even without the monkey grip. I did a sort of 'poor man's' claw rout on mine using only a Dremel. Oh, and the easiest so far, definitely the heel joint. BeAR
I just finished the neck joint. Your right, its prolly the easiest one to do. Got any pics of the budget lions claw? (no offence intended). Sounds interesting.
Metalgoth
Argh..I would, but I don't have it anywhere online and I don't know how to get it here otherwise. I'll have to put together a web page of some sort.
Joel Lindgard
Paint job for me, or changing the pickups.
SprocketBoy
Hands down, gotta go with the custom paint job but like everyone else i think anything that you can do to customize your ax is worth it
Metalgoth
Okay, I've just finished scalloping my top four frets, and I have to say that it is the easiest Jem mod. Use the tutorial, invest in a quarter inch file, and you get great looking results in 15 minutes, and that was my first try, AND I did one fret on a throwaway neck first. Another great tutorial
Patrick Deno
Only thing I've ever modified on the guitars I've had were the electronics. I'm not much of a wood or metal guy (unless you count Heavy Metal ) LJ
EKG
I generally swap out the pups if anything.

Maiden69
Sorry for being the odd ball there Brian, other... , as of now, since Igot a brand new contour sander, it's scalloping necks... but if Iwas going to go from over there will be a mix of 2 , modify the shape and custom color! Done both on the 2 guitars I'va done, and I got 2 more on the works thatI'm doing the same ... But with scalloped necks.
southpaw rocker
definitely change the pickups. who cares what it looks like as long as it's got EMG's in it! and i kinda like that SRV worn out strat look. i wish i could do that to mine. silvertonessuckbutigotone
Refinish! Of course I MUST replace those stock pickups. Thats not an option
that was the first post since november of 2002, but i guess i'll throw my 2 cents in, I prefer doing finishing over pretty much anything else because you dont have to do what everyone else does. you can make up your own methods for pretty much everything, and i guess changing pickups and body shape altering has some creativity in what you do, but HOW you do it is a different story. and plus you CAN still do whatever you want with finsihing. so it works both ways, and i guess im sort of an artist, so im bias. Southpa
One of the jobs that I've enjoyed most in the past was metal fabrication. So I like to incorporate some of that into my guitar projects. Its almost getting to be a signature thing with me! Anyway, its all highly polished 16 ga. stainless steel pickguards, control cover plates and truss rod access covers.
Thoughtless 7
Changing the pickups...that way you know how they are and how well they play.
bigdguitars
I love adding new electronics. Phase switches, coil taps, just make guitars more useful...
PerryL
I said changing Pickups but Altering the body was my second choice As it was quite fun to cut the sweep on the back of the neck pocket of a Jem style and set in an output jack. rick_here
New pups...would be my vote on anything more "major." And I dunno if this qualifies as a mod or not; Grolsch Beer Bottle "washers"---they hold yer strap on real good. Just slip em over the strap buttons. Another "minor mod" I plan on doing is: making pup-mounting-rings from a regular "wall outlet/switch plate" (the thing that goes around light switches & wall-plugs). I have some humbuckers that are just slightly too big for a route I'm gonna make on a Tele body....and will need "larger" pup-rings than the ones that came with em. I like the options of being able to use: wood, metal (brass/stainless) or plastic ones. The plastic ones almost exactly match that Gibson "cream" color. Also, there's nothin like a rilly good trem-setup.
MikeB
tweaking the electronics much... treble boosters, no load switches yadda yadda... they would be the simpler mods. otherwise its just in the usual building where i tweak things... such as the RR V i have almost completed, bolt on. i took the traditional bulky heel, and tapered it towards the edge, you will see within a month what i mean... hopefully get this into GOTM...
