Mahogany/Maple/Ebony neck on mahogany V

Recommended Posts

Just going to chronicle the neck here, because I am so slow that if I do the entire guitar here it will get real stale real quick

I have crap for tools,so suck it if you don't like it :P

Skillsaw with neck blank on my C3500 workbench. The blank was glued years ago

Cut both sides as deep as I could

Finished the cut with my bandsaw then cleaned both pieces up with planer and stored the one I won't be using yet

All glued together in an ebony sandwich...scary,right?That is Gaboon Ebony I bought some years ago and I have been using pieces here and there on stuff.Ebony is good to keep around for random stuff

I think that neck may take me some getting used to from the back, but I absolutely love it from the side. The way the ebony accent melts into the ebony board is so cool!

Are you planning to keep the point of the headstock as is? I'd be tempted to trace it out and experiment with different ways to knock the tip back a bit. See how different angles or curves add a little visual excitement.

Aside from just rounding it over a bit,the headstock is in it's final shape.

Yeah, granted that the ebony scarf is a bit unusual in it's placement, and a bit thick.Maybe on the next one I'll do two thinner pieces separated by another piece of mahogany...scarf joints are not an every day thing for me,so I am still experimenting.

Well,I toyed with the idea of "Evil Goat","Devil Goat",Demon Goat",and the like, but it all sounded just a bit too cheesy to my ears.I also considered my initials, but WAF,WF,or anything like that just had no ring to it.At first I was going to just inlay a goat's head, but the first one took hours and I could never repeat it as well, nor was I completely happy with it...So I drew up the goat thing and they put it on a brand for me.Hand drawn and I told them to copy it exactly because IMO if it was all pretty it wouldn't really fit the "sinister" moniker very well.

Also,my initials are in the brand. The horns form a W and the F is on the forehead...

DBK on the other hand does sound good all by itself.

Okay,so I'll turn this into the entire guitar topic...body is top routed and power sanded to rough dimensions.Notice the black lines, which are where the body was going to be originally, but because this is a 22 fret guitar and the body was designed for 24 the bridge was overlapping those lines,so I redrew it

Hand sanding from here, then I have to rout the back for the control cavity and battery, since this one will have EMG 81/85.

I just spent extra time with the rasp on the ebony and my sanding blocks are really hard and flat,so it wasn't too bad...definitely did have to keep an eye on it though.

It's funny how a 3/4" thick chunk of ebony covers so much area at that 12 degree angle.Being that I don't do scarfs too much I wasn't really prepared for that.

My Cumaru LP I am working on works out better in that area, because I used a much thinner chunk
