Number 2 In The Hopper...

Recommended Posts

I may have mentioned in some other threads that I'm building my next guitar for a co-worker. Since he knows I'm just learning, I've decided to build it to his specifications but I'm not holding him to the purchase until it's finished. If he likes the end product, he'll buy it. If not, I'll just keep it and consider it a learning experience -or I'll sell it to someone else.

Anyway, the design is identical to my first one except the accent laminate is purpleheart and it will have a tremolo, dual humbuckers and Sperzels. Body is mahogany with a 3/4 inch burl maple carved top which will eventually be finished with a transparent purple burst. Hope you like it! :D

looks REAL nice, but does that 12th fret inlay seem crooked to you guys?? Must be me...

It's not just you. The point peaks over the top on one side, and the bottom on the other. It's not really crooked, it only looks like it wants to be :D

Truth be told, after I finished it, I wished I'd just made it symmetrical. :D

Toddler68, those little things mentioned to me are what give a completely handmade instrument individuality and character. Don't sweat it, man... My guitars will all have little "Character Flaws" in them too as we are not making CNC cookie-cutter instruments. You are doing awesome work, and your co-worker will be THRILLED with it, I'm sure. I know I would be...

I am surprised that the top is so thick... I typically use 1/4 inch thick tops and backs or less for my chambered body guitars. Are you concerned that it may be a bit bright in tone with all that maple and being a neck-through? It should sustain to infinity and beyond though!! Boggs

That's what I keep telling myself... it's my new mantra. "It's OK man, it'll turn out fine. You'll never see it once it's got a finish on it. Don't cry..."

I used a 1/2 inch thick top on the first one and I love the way it sounds. Of course, this one's a little thicker but I think I lost about a third of the mass anyway when I did the carve. Maybe it's the nature of the burl, but it's not as bright as you might think.

I put strings on yesterday and it really sings... and yes, it sustains like a mutha!

My coworker tried it out this morning and I thought he was going to have a coronary. I've got him right where I want him :D

My understanding was that spalted wood was essentially dead tonaly. I thought I remember Drak mentioning that while back. It makses sense to me as it is littered with rotted areas. How did your first one sound? I'm curious to see how this thicker top will effect the sound. Looking good though!

It all depends on how far along trhe spalt has gone.

I've got pieces that are spalted that are hard and solid as a rock, and others that if you breathed on them they would just vaporize and disintegrate into the air.

The further along the spalting is, the more tonally dead the piece will be.

Advanced spalted wood has absolutely no tonal signature at all, it is as close to balsa wood as one could get.

that looks too good man...it's a shame you're putting a top on tho, it's so beautiful how it is.  next time there better be no cap, or at least a cap with the neck lams showing through...too beautiful man.

I will definitely NOT put a cap on the next one. Does that make everybody happy? :D

Ahem? :DB)

Yeah, there's no spalt on that baby.

Toddler, I think you think like I think a lot. :D

Or I think like you think a lot.....

Like, whenever you make a decision on something, I probably would have made a very similar decision, I love both your guitars, can't wait to see how you finish this one.

Both your tops remind me of my John Holmes top, or my John Holmes top reminds me of your tops, heheheee......

And I completely dig the original body styles.

:DB):D

I also really like your guitars. Both of them came out great and I can't wait to see more from you. Really quite amazing and I'm sure that guy will absolutely love the guitar. If so you will have a really great reference for future commissioned work. Well thanks for sharing the guitar porn. Good stuff. Jason
